Lake Mac Campers Flipped

(KEITH COUNTY, Neb.) — Keith County EMS paged to beach area 5 at Lake McConaughy  due to multiple campers that had been flipped secondary to a major weather event.

Radar-indicated wind gusts up to 80 mph and quarter-to-nickel-sized hail [1, 2] struck the Lake McConaughy region, leading the National Weather Service (NWS) in North Platte to issue urgent “destructive storm” warnings late last night.

The severe weather system passed directly over Garden, Keith, and Arthur counties between roughly 9:30 PM and 10:15 PM MDT.

Because the storm cleared the area overnight, local authorities and property owners are actively assessing the full extent of physical damage. Impact data indicates the following specifics: [3, 4]

Storm Metrics and Severity

* Peak Winds: The NWS tracked wind gusts hitting 70 to 80 mph as the line of supercells swept northeast across the lake at 50 to 55 mph. [1, 2]

* Hail Size: The storm dropped quarter-sized hail (approx. 1 inch in diameter) near Lewellen and nickel-sized hail across the central lake area. [2]

* Destructive Classification: The storm line was officially flagged by meteorologists as a “destructive threat” specifically for Lake McConaughy’s campgrounds and marine infrastructure. [1, 5]

Reported and Expected Damage Profile [5]

The severe cell tracked just 7 miles northeast of Lewellen and traveled directly down the northern shoreline of Lake McConaughy. Reported impacts match the NWS warning criteria for 80-mph wind fields: [1, 2]

* Campgrounds & Recreation: Areas including the [Clear Creek State Wildlife Management Area] (just east of Lewellen), Otter Creek, and Lake View campgrounds bore the brunt of the straight-line winds. [1]

* Property Damage: Structural damage reports include compromised roofing, shattered vehicle windshields, and destroyed outbuildings or carports. [2, 6, 7, 8]

* Trees and Power Grid: High winds caused extensive tree limb breakage and uprooted trees, causing localized power outages along Highway 92 and Highway 61. [1]

* Agricultural Impact: Just north and west of the lake, irrigation pivots and standing corn crops suffered damage from the combination of hail and intense crosswinds. [2]
