The Intersection of Free Speech and Hate Speech

Albeit, our Constitution does not protect our feelings, it protects actions. It clearly states that the government shall not restrict an individual’s right to speak out against their government in the First Amendment.

Many of you who will continue to read this will be mad at the four Republicans. We understand why. We were at first as well.

Four Republicans—Representatives Mike Flood of Nebraska, Jeff Hurd of Colorado, Tom McClintock of California and Cory Mills of Florida—voted against Rep. Nancy Mace’s measure citing Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar’s reaction to the death of Charlie Kirk.

She posted comments such as, “He [Charlie Kirk] enacted his political agenda by preying on weak minded people,” and she reposted a video on X further blaming Charlie Kirk for his own murder.

According to Newsweek, Omar denied making such comments and noted that the resolution included no direct quotes from her.

The four Republican lawmakers who opposed the censure said they condemned Omar’s actions but voted against the measure to uphold free speech and First Amendment protections.

Again, as we have seen even in our area, where does free speech and decency and regard for human life (all human life) intersect? What kind of leadership is leading the country when leaders add to the words of hate associated with the death of a human?

We can hope Omar is being truthful and did not say these things. If Flood says he believes Omar should be investigated by the House Ethics Committee before any disciplinary action is taken, does that mean such an investigation is being conducted?

Mike Flood does good things for Nebraska, in my opinion, but is he representing Nebraska in this very delicate situation? The resolution failed 214-213. Four Republican votes condoned Omar’s need to metaphorically kick people while they were down.

What action will Flood take now to address hate speech by our leaders?
